Newcastle Rowing Club (NRC) celebrates its 30th anniversary this year and excited to welcome athletes from around the state to Throsby Creek, after being awarded Rowing Australia’s 2021 Club of the Year. The spectacle of The Gift will be a tough race for the hosts against the young and strong Newcastle University
Boat Club crew.

The Linwood Throsby Gift Relay is the feature event of the Central Districts Rowing Sprint Championships hosted by Newcastle Rowing Club on Throsby Creek, Carrington on Sunday, November 27, 2022. It will be the 24th annual regatta held on Throsby Creek and one of the most interesting one-day rowing regattas held in
the State, over a distinctive 3-lane sprint course.

 

Locals from Newcastle and the Hunter Valley will compete against athletes travelling from the NSW Mid- North Coast, Central Coast, and Sydney. The Linwood Throsby Gift Relay is unique within the Australian Rowing landscape as it provides a relay experience, rarely seen in the sport. With $1000 in prize money – donated by Anne Sharkey & Associates– along with a historic trophy up for grabs Newcastle, Lake Macquarie, Hunter Valley Grammar School and Newcastle University Boat Club, will battle it out on Throsby Creek, in what will be an all out local clash.

John McLeod, who is heading into his 24th year as President of Newcastle Rowing Club, is excited about theevent and thanks the City of Newcastle for their support in co-hosting the event. “We are the only inner-city rowing club in Newcastle, and we are very keen to bring colour and energy to the creek, especially this year, after being named Rowing Australia’s 2021 Club of the Year. We have support from the City of Newcastle, along with sponsorship from Port of Newcastle and several other organisations. It is wonderful these major organisations get behind our club!”, he said.

Newcastle Lord Mayor Nuatali Nelmes, Patron of Newcastle Rowing Club, said City of Newcastle welcomed the opportunity to co-host the 24th annual Central Districts Rowing Sprint Championships in Newcastle. "City of Newcastle is proud to support one of the biggest one-day rowing regattas right here in Newcastle, and we wish all the competitors travelling from across NSW well, including Newcastle Rowing Club," Cr Nelmes said.

"City of Newcastle are working to attract more State and National sporting events of this calibre to Newcastle." “It is a great event for Newcastle with competitors and their supporters converging on Throsby Creek. We are very proud to be a part of the Throsby Creek, Linwood and Carrington communities ”, Mr McLeod said.

The 2022 Linwood Throsby Gift Relay and Sprint Regatta will provide an exciting spectacle for the Throsby Creek, Linwood and Carrington precincts.
