ARC 2023 Day 6 Wrap

Published Sun 02 Apr 2023

With some of the best conditions all week, the big boats were out and flying down the course. Some absolute nail-biting races with St Catherine’s holding on in the WU19 8+ holding off a late charge from a University of Queensland composite by 0.75 of a second. The girls will be again in action today in Schoolgirl Eight. Can they make it 2 from 2 in the 8?

It was more Gold in the U21 Quads with NSW clubs taking it out in both the Men’s and Women's event. It was a Sydney/UTS composite coming through in the final 500. On the Men’s side Sydney University were the crew to beat with a strong group of developing athletes coming through led by Sam Bristow.

It was another less than a second win, this time in the U23 Men’s 8+ with UTS Haberfield flying out of the blocks catching everyone by surprise and managing to hold on to an emotional victory. On the Women’s side a Sydney University and Melbourne University combination held off Mercantile by 0.67.

Unlike the close margins of the races before them the UTS U23 Men’s Quad put clear water over the rest before the 1000m mark and didn’t show any sign of slowing down going over the line going back-to-back in the event. The Open Women’s Quad was a different story with a UTS Haberfield composite of Georgie Rowe and Laura Gourley working their way from 3rd to come through Sydney Rowing club in the last 500 for victory. Marcus Della Marta (UTS Haberfield) claiming the last Gold of the day as the sun was setting in the Open Men’s Quad. Sydney University caught crews napping on the inside to climb their way into the medals nabbing a bronze.

At close of business on Saturday night it is Sydney University 1, Sydney Rowing Club 2 and UTS Haberfield 3 on the Medal Tally
