From Rio to SIRC

Growing up in Brazil, Cauan always wanted to try rowing, but life got in the way with school and university studies taking up all his time. With no rowing in schools or universities it is hard for people to get involved. However, finding time in his late twenties, Cauan found a local sports club that taught rowing and he started going down a couple times a week.Learning to row in a scud, (which could be very useful in a busy morning on Iron Cove Bay!) Cauan quickly developed a love for the sport and began to develop his skills. In 2014 he started to dedicate more of his time to training with an eye for racing.

Whist training in Rio, Cauan started training a mixed double with Ana. After spending long hours rowing together, they grew to know each other better, and they realised that they were meant to be more than just a partnership on the water. In 2017 the couple got married at the club surrounded by the friends and teammates that had brought them together in what was a beautiful ceremony. The rowing crazy couple couldn’t get away from the action choosing to spend their honeymoon competing against the world’s best at the 2017 World Masters Games at Lake Karapiro in New Zealand.

Loving this side of the world so much the couple moved to Sydney in 2019.  After being introduced to a former Leichhardt Rowing Club member, the couple decided to join the club and settle in the inner west.  The next step for the couple was adjusting to the way things are being done over here. Having previously only rowed on an albano course, Cauan and Ana had to a lot to learn with Cauan highlighting,
“we also learn early that the faster rower has the right of the way. So we don't need to look back every few strokes to ensure that nobody is stopping in the middle of the course doing whatever.”
Cauan has had plenty of experience competing at many South American Masters and the World Master Games in 2017 where he came 3rd in the A single and in the Mixed A Double.

Over the past season here in Australia, Cauan has successfully raced some of the younger bucks over 2000m showing age is just a number and throwing down a very fast time in the Ed Trickett Grade Championships. He was also invited to race in the Invitational Single race at the Riverview Gold Cup earlier this year. He’ll be out to break 3:30 in the Men's A Single Scull in what will be a hot field at both the NSW and Australian Masters Championships. Make sure to also keep an eye out for the couple racing together in the first session of racing on Saturday in the Mixed A-C Double Scull at the NSW Masters Championships.
