Henley Royal Regatta Day 2

Another exciting day of racing at Henley Royal Regatta.

Sydney University went down to Edinburgh University ‘B’ in the Island Challenge Cup (Student Women’s Eights). In a hard-fought race, where the Australians took an early lead, there were pushes and counter pushes throughout. The Scottish crew managed to move into the lead and extend it to clear water before Sydney University sprinted to the line to finish second by a boat length. Race highlights available here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hVSmhC02sVQ

Moving through to the next round of the Island Challenge Cup is Nicela Martincic of UTS Haberfield Rowing Club. The two-time winner of the Schoolgirl Single Scull at the Head of the River has had a strong season in the University of Washington 2nd Varsity Eight. That continues at Henley as the Huskies knocked out Edinburgh University ‘A’. Race coverage can be found here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wfV1ed_RwWg They race again tonight against U.S.R Triton from the Netherlands at 1am (all times AEST).

Earning a day off is The King’s School in the Princess Elizabeth Challenge Cup (Junior Men’s Eights). They punched their ticket into the final eight, where they will face juggernaut St Paul’s School on Friday. Race footage of their win over Hampton school can be found here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ny9hXGOsBaY

Scots College bowed out in the 2nd round of the Princess Elizabeth Challenge Cup being knocked out by The King’s School, Chester. In a gutsy race where crews overlapped for almost the entire 2112 metres of the famous Henley course, King’s School Chester assumed the lead in the last quarter of the race to move into the next round. Sydney University put in a spirited performance in the Visitors (Intermediate Men’s Coxless Fours) crossing a boat length down on Oxford University ‘A’. Leaving nothing out there, the Lachlan Miles stroked crew sprinted home pressuring Oxford to the finish line. Race highlights can be found here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n0l1tHDvRNs

Edinburgh University scored an tough win over Sydney University in the first round of the Prince Albert (Student Men’s Coxed Fours). Sydney University held the lead in the early stages with it being whittled away down the course. The Scottish crew just taking the lead at the death and going on to record a narrow win by two-thirds of a boat length. Highlights here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YapGSzjonHA

It was a good day for Sydney Rowing Club with both eights progressing. Their Wargrave Challenge Cup crew (Club Women’s Eights) knocking off Cantabrigian. Moving into the lead early the crew were never headed and were able to drop the rating as the race progressed. Highlights can be viewed here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_QPSYYaEFuA The Thames Challenge Cup Crew (Club Men’s Eights) levelled the ledger with London Rowing Club, who knocked out their Britannia Coxed Four a day prior. In similar fashion to their Wargrave crew, they showed good speed at the start and were able to get a good advantage and control the race from there. Footage here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GjQKSy6Wuxg Tonight they face Royal Chester Rowing Club at 9:10pm.

President’s Cup winner David Bartholot (Sydney University Boat Club) has a quieter start to his Henley campaign in the Diamond Challenge Sculls. He was due to face Dmytro Mikhay, but the Ukrainian sculler won’t be starting, leaving Bartholot to scull over the course at 11:15pm to progress into Friday’s quarter finals.

Another Sydney University athlete racing in the single sculls is Georgia Miansarow, who made it through last Friday’s qualifiers. Her first round clash in the Princess Royal Challenge Cup is against Ukrainian Diana Dymchenko at 8:20pm tonight.

Also from the Linley Cove boatshed is Matt Smith and Nick Mirow in the Silver Goblets (Men’s Pairs) where they face a Pienaar & Stocovaz from the USA at 3:05am.
