NSW Pathways Camp 2

Published Tue 14 Nov 2017

The second of four Junior Pathway training days was conducted at UTS Haberfield Rowing Club on Sunday 12th November.

With the current busy regatta schedule and heavy schoolwork load, there were fewer people available than last month, however, there was still a good turn out with two girls’ VIIIs and two boys’ VIIIs hitting the water.

The athletes were kept busy between rows.  Following breakfast, Emma Molenaar from Mpowerment2U introduced some breathing and relaxation techniques to help performance.  The athletes then did a 6sec WattBike power test.

Lightweight international, Sarah Pound, came straight from a trail run that morning to give the junior athletes an insight in to how she came into the sport and then managed the transition into the National team whilst balancing her study and work life with training. Having taken a year off to establish her professional accounting career she is now starting to make the transition back into the life of a high performance athlete.

For those that were still available, there was then a second row in a different boat class and coaching for some before finishing up for the day.

It was a great day with a good atmosphere amongst all the rowers and coaches from across many schools and clubs

Rowing NSW would like to thank Tim McLaren and his team from UTS (Alex Field, Dave Gely, Matt Curtin; Elizabeth Halsall) for their support in hosting the day and supplying the venue, boats, oars, coach boats and coaches as well as BBQ.

Special thanks must go to Henry Lees for jumping in the stroke seat in order to get the second boys boat on the water and also for being the tong-master and all-round good guy.

Thanks to all the other coaches and Lizzi Chapman from NSWIS for making the day happen, and to Sarah Pound from UTS for sharing the experiences of her journey with the group.

The next Junior Pathway training day will be hosted by Sydney Rowing Club on 10th December. Expressions of Interest will be invited soon via the RNSW website.
