Newcastle Rowing Club have shared their Round 2 Media Release and can be found below.

Newcastle Rowing Club is co-hosting Series #2 of the 2022 Rowing NSW Indoor Series at their boatshed on Throsby Creek this weekend.

It is the first time the club, which recently celebrated its 30th Anniversary, has hosted such an event. The day will include 2000m, 1000m and 500m events, with some competitors opting to compete in each event, whilst others will target one or two events. Competitors race against people in their own agecategory or para category.

Rowing NSW introduced the indoor series in 2019 and it is the first time Newcastle Rowing Club has been a co-host.

“We are thrilled to be a part of this event. There will be plenty of competitors zooming in from the UK, France and the Netherlands, and across Australia right into our shed on Throsby Creek!”, Club Captain, Phoebe Sanders said.

Indoor rowing is slowly growing in popularity in Australia, however, it is very popular overseas with large competitions occurring at amazing locations around the world.

“It is a great opportunity to showcase our boatshed to the world with the majority of entries via the ‘virtual’ option. It also allows us to get some racing in before the NSW State Indoor Championships in
October”, she said.

“We also have several members competing in person across the varying age categories, including a late comer to rowing David Laird”, Phoebe said. David started rowing in his 70’s after seeing the rowers on Throsby Creek whilst running. “I love being out on the water but sometimes the weather may keep us indoors. It is a great option to beable to jump on an ergo and even more of a challenge to be part of a competition”, David said.

Indoor rowing allows you to row against your own resistance so it can be great for those starting an exercise routine through to elite athletes. It has many health and fitness rewards including cardio, flexibility and strength benefits all in one. It became popular during Covid lockdowns, with suppliers running out of rowing machines for several months.

Indoor rowing can be taken up at any age due to the low-impact nature of the sport. Indoor rowing machines (affectionately known as ‘ergos’) are available for use at most gyms and Newcastle Rowing Club has indoor memberships available. There is a huge online following with indoor rowing races happening every weekend somewhere in the world. With a simple free App you can also jump into a race with someone anytime anywhere, or compare your times to people all over the world.

Round 2 of the 2022 NSW Indoor Rowing Series runs on Sunday 18th September from 9:30am with entries open to anyone until 5pm Friday 16th September via the Rowing NSW website.
