Rowing NSW welcomes Jindabyne Rowing Club - The new home of rowing in the Snowy Mountains

Published Thu 17 Oct 2024

Think that the Snowy Mountains is just for skiers, snowboarders, mountain bikers and hikers? Think again.

Rowing is about to make its mark in the famed alpine region with the registration this month of Jindabyne Rowing Club Inc.

Based on the shores of the famous freshwater lake, JRC has been formed as a community club by a group of dedicated and passionate local Masters rowers. It aims to provide a permanent home for rowing in an area that is used regularly by national and international crews as well as high performance club and school squads for training camps.

“We have a vision to build rowing for the local community through learn to row, return to row and school programs, provide a framework to develop our members competitive rowing, and augment the Snowy Mountains tourism offerings with rowing experiences,” says JRC President Peter Macartney.

Boasting a surface area larger than Sydney Harbour, there are many opportunities to row within the expanse of Lake Jindabyne, and sitting at over 930m above sea level, we are happy to arm wrestle Armidale for the title of Australia’s highest rowing club. Rowers can choose a “town” row along the foreshore past Banjo Patterson Park to the Dam wall and return, or a “bush” row along farmland past Hatchery Bay and return. A long distance 14km (one way) row from Jindabyne to Kalkite, offers a stunning adventure up the Eucumbene River at the northern end of the lake taking you past Mt Kalkite and the steeply wooded hills of Kosciuszko National Park.

Jindabyne Rowing Club would like to extend an invitation to any member of the Rowing NSW family to come and share this wonderful part of the world, particularly over the coming summer and autumn. We are also happy to assist any schools and clubs with local knowledge for rowing camps and off-water high altitude training. Please don’t hesitate to contact us using the details below for further information or to request a row.
